Improved Tests of Relations for Baryon Isomultiplet Splittings
نویسنده
چکیده
The least well-known octet baryon mass is MΞ0 = 1314.9 ± 0.6 MeV. The prospect of an improved measurement of its mass by the KTeV experimental program at Fermilab, and opportunities for improvements in charged and excited hyperon and ∆ mass measurements, makes it timely to re-examine descriptions of isospin splittings in baryons containing light quarks. By examining such relations as the Coleman-Glashow relation Mn −Mp +MΞ− −MΞ0 = MΣ− −MΣ+ one can distinguish between those models making use of oneor two-body effects involving quarks and those involving genuine three-body effects. A hierarchy based on an expansion in 1/Nc, where Nc is the number of quark colors, is useful in this respect. The present status of other quark-model mass relations involving Λ− Σ mixing and the baryon decuplet is also noted, and the degree to which one can determine parameters such as quark mass differences and individual electromagnetic contributions to splittings is discussed. Revised version submitted to Phys. Rev. D.

Isospin splittings in the light-baryon octet from lattice QCD and QED.
While electromagnetic and up-down quark mass difference effects on octet baryon masses are very small, they have important consequences. The stability of the hydrogen atom against beta decay is a prominent example. Here, we include these effects by adding them to valence quarks in a lattice QCD calculation based on Nf=2+1 simulations with five lattice spacings down to 0.054 fm, lattice sizes up...

A method for computing electromagnetic properties of hadrons in lattice QCD is applied to the extraction of electromagnetic properties of the octet baryons. This allows a determination of the full dependence of the baryon masses on the charges and masses of the valence quarks. Results of a first numerical study (at β = 5.7 with Wilson action and light quark masses fixed from the pseudoscalar me...

It has long been established that the isospin symmetry is slightly broken in the nuclear interaction. On the quark level, most studies on the violation of isospin symmetry focus on the mass difference between u and d quarks, in addition to the (direct) Coulomb interactions between quarks. However, it has been demonstrated that there is other source of isospin violation on the quark level. Maltm...
